Atrium Health Pineville Central Energy Plant
Scope
Central Energy Plant (CEP) with three 350 horsepower Firetube boilers, each capable of producing over 14 million BTU/hour; four 1,000-ton Trane chillers paired with four EVAPCO cooling towers; 5KV emergency power system consisting of four 2,000KW CAT 3516C generators, ENCORP and Siemans paralleling switchgear, seven Russ electric automatic transfer switches, and remote PLCs
Two 35,000-gallon underground fuel oil tanks serve the boilers and generators. All system controls are monitored by a SCADA system that can be viewed locally and remotely. Some control capabilities also exist, as the new CEP is planned to be unmanned at most times
Chilled water and steam services travel over 850 feet in double-walled Perma Pipe 15 feet underground to a tunnel constructed at the face of the hospital; all existing hot water and steam systems were replaced
Highlights
Two of the chillers are equipped with a factory-installed Free Cooling System that conserves energy during the cold winter months
Facility managers at the main campus in Charlotte are equipped with additional computers and monitors to control and monitor the Pineville CEP
Challenges
Located 1,200 feet from the main hospital, the CEP needed to be designed to accommodate growth
