Rodgers Builders, along with DPR Construction, is currently building the new Carolinas Rehabilitation Hospital, the first phase of Atrium Health’s modernization of the Carolinas Medical Center Campus. The expansion includes over 1,200,000-sq.-ft. and two pedestrian bridges connecting the expansions back to the existing hospital campus and a surface parking lot. The project also includes substantial infrastructure upgrades and site work. The five-story Carolinas Rehabilitation Replacement Facility, at 152,204-sq.-ft., includes 70 private patient rooms, a 9,300-sq.-ft. outpatient clinic, an outdoor therapy challenge garden, an aquatic therapy program, and a center for independent living. Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center was recently recognized as a “Best Hospital” in the Charlotte metro region for the fifth consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, Atrium Health Carolinas Rehabilitation has been named a Best Rehabilitation Hospital by U.S. News and World Report, ranking 15th in the nation and earning the highest ranking among all rehabilitation hospitals in the Carolinas.

This new facility will be a one-of-a-kind regional rehabilitation hospital, thoughtfully designed with the latest state-of-the-art technology and programs to better serve patients and the surrounding communities.

The team at Atrium Health wants to build a healthcare facility to change the healing environment. The goal is to not only transform healthcare delivery but also change project delivery. Early on, this team embarked on a journey to create a truly collaborative team environment of vulnerable trust, transparency, and mutual respect. The project will be delivered by implementing various Lean concepts both during design and construction and a Big Room for collocation and collaboration throughout the project.

To facilitate early caregiver input, DPR Rodgers built full-scale mockups of the innovative patient room design, allowing nursing staff and hospital leadership to physically experience the new layout. This allowed the team to make changes during design development and reduce rework in the field. With Atrium Health’s dedication to changing project delivery, over 60% of the project will be prefabricated in an offsite warehouse improving schedule, quality, and safety.
