Eastway Middle School receives garden makeover

12/21/2015

Eastway Middle School, located in East Charlotte, was given a fence and new life to their school garden due to a team effort from Rodgers and several other companies. Spot’em Inc. located underground utilities while Allison Fence installed a fence surrounding the garden plots and Metrolina Landscape provided demolition and landscaping.

Sheryl Lantzy, a math teacher at Eastway, is responsible for spearheading the garden program. Students began planting this past fall and a winter crop of lettuces can already be seen sprouting from the ground. Lantzy hopes to teach students the importance of growing their own food along with the responsibility it takes to produce a plant from seeds. The program will educate students about cultivating vegetables and herbs, while incorporating math and science into the lessons.
