Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community is located on 125 acres of land in Asheville, North Carolina. As part of a campus expansion, Rodgers Builders constructed three new buildings that included separate additions, tie-ins, and renovations.
The six-story Independent Living Building (Tuton Hall) is 190,000 square feet and is divided into 83 units (1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments ranging from 700 to 2,500 square feet). There is an underground parking garage and residents have a dedicated, fenced-in storage space.
Adjacent to the existing indoor pool is the new six-story, 60,000-square-foot Assisted Living Building (Haden Hall). An octagon-shaped tower gives the building its distinct appearance. Inside there are 20 units along with nautilus/aerobics rooms, ceramics and arts studios, a lounge, a deli, dining rooms, and two large activity rooms that have full–size kitchens. Additionally, Rodgers renovated 15,000 square feet of the existing Assisted Living Building.
The two-story Skilled Nursing Building is 25,000 square feet and it contains 14 rooms for residents. The old building was renovated (6,000 square feet) and a new Health Care Chapel was added.
Deerfield’s new Health Care Chapel is unique because it does not have pews; instead, an open floor plan allows easy access for handicapped residents. The interior is accented with heavy beams, dark-stained wood trim, and beautiful pieces of stained glass.
The aforementioned three buildings, Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing were awarded an Excellence in Construction award from ABC Carolinas.
Rodgers was asked to extend their stay in order to renovate Deerfield’s two-story Community Center. In addition to exterior work, this included upgrading the HVAC system, renovating the kitchen, café, and dining areas, relocating a staircase, and expanding Deerfield’s auditorium space—the Blue Ridge Room.
