This project was an addition to the existing hospital; it consisted of five floors of shell space along with a complete interior upfit and a renovation to the existing lab. The new structure was constructed over the existing loading dock. To prevent the existing loading dock from being relocated, the project was designed to span the dock while allowing room for trucks to drive underneath. This required the unique steel structure to hang from trusses rather than to rest on a conventional column foundation.
Scheduling was a challenge due to the complex structure, the unusually tight confines of the site, and the ongoing operations of two loading docks (one temporary and one for the adjacent Shriner’s Hospital). Rogers’ construction team utilized early release of the site and steel packages to begin work at the earliest possible date. Rodgers also used strategic combinations of trade packages such as earthwork and utilities work to maximize the efficiency of the work being done at a given time within a given space.
