Over the course of 14 months, Rodgers worked steadfast to complete Central Piedmont Community College’s (CPCC) new culinary arts building—just before students returned for the 2009 fall semester. The 30,612-square-foot building, which was named Philip L. Van Every Culinary Arts Center, is located at the corner of E. 7th Street and N. Kings Drive, parallel to the John Belk Plaza portion of the Little Sugar Creek Greenway.
Inside the two-story building there are standard classrooms, four full-size commercial kitchens, an auditorium classroom with cooking station, plus executive and main dining rooms with views of downtown Charlotte.
Highlights of the exterior include retaining walls, landscape and hardscape areas, an extensive herb garden, rain garden (bioretention area), plus a 30,000-gallon rainwater underground cistern for irrigation.
A fountain was erected at the entrance to the Culinary Arts Building and dedicated to B. D. Rodgers, the chairman and founder of Rodgers Builders, Inc.
