North Carolina Dance Theatre’s (NCDT) groundbreaking ceremony was held in April 2009 and Rodgers completed the building approximately one year later. This building has since been named the Patricia McBride and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance.
The two-story building is distinctive with its three faceted metal panels extending toward the sky. Three of the dance studios have glass curtainwall offering views of the city.
The unique angles found in the building’s design had the potential to create multiple conflicts within the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems of the building. The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) was extremely successful in facilitating MEP coordination on the project, catching every potential conflict during the modeling stage before they were discovered in the field.
Inside the 37,000-square-foot, steel-frame, tilt-up concrete panel structure are six dance studios, a black-box theatre with approximately 200 seats, changing rooms and showers, costume shop, administrative offices, and meeting rooms.
NCDT shares a city block with the McColl Center for Visual Art, a Gothic-style church renovated by Rodgers and converted into studio space for visiting artists.
Rodgers submitted the NCDT building for LEED® Certification with a concentration on sustainable site development, water and energy efficiency, indoor air quality, use of regional and rapidly renewable materials, and recycled construction waste.
The NCDT project received a 2010 Merit Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors of the Carolinas (ABCC).
