Located at the corner of Ninth and Brevard Streets, the distinctive Center City Building is guaranteed to capture the viewer’s attention. The contemporary glass building, with fritted and spandrel panels, rises three stories then twists with a cantilevered level to add three more levels; then adds and twists twice again to create a very distinct, iconic building. This building is a sharp contrast to the traditional brick structures located on the University’s main campus ten miles north of the city.
The 143,000-square-foot Center City Building has 13 levels—basement, penthouse, and 11 floors in the middle. There are 24 classrooms, 34 offices with open space for 77 partitioned workstations, an auditorium, lecture hall, commercial kitchen, art gallery, bookstore, and a café.
Sustainability, including energy and water conservation, was key. Lighting occupancy sensors were installed throughout building and approximately 90-percent of the rooms have daylight views. Graywater from inside the building is filtered, treated, and pumped back into the building to flush toilets and urinals. The plaza is part of a “green roof” system that sits atop of the underground loading dock. Rainwater is diverted to a cistern located beneath the landscaped area where there are pumps that redistribute the water to provide irrigation for the lawn, plants, and trees.
The Center City classroom building project is registered under the LEED® green building certification program.
