Chambers Building Comprehensive Renovation

Location: Davidson, North Carolina
Industry: Education > Performing Arts
Services: General Contracting, Preconstruction

Originally constructed in 1927, the 95,000-square-foot Chambers Building is the most prominent academic building on the Davidson College campus. The project scope focused on a comprehensive renovation of the Chambers Building plus a redesign of its façade.

Situated directly in the center of campus, the Chambers Building was occupied during the entire renovation, which required complex phasing plans (four phases of over the course of two years).

The full interior renovation included converting the existing Love Auditorium into new state-of-the-art classrooms and faculty offices. The rear façade was redesigned to address the existing plaza between the Chambers Building and Little Library.

New design features include a classical limestone portico that resembles the building’s existing architecture. The atrium lobby and redesigned gallery are dramatic yet inviting spaces to host college events and gatherings.

The contract construction duration was 38 months, with occupancy in August 2005. After working with the Owner and Architect through different phasing options and constructability analysis, the Rodgers team was able to improve the actual construction duration to 26 months with occupancy in August 2004.
