Carolinas AGC presents Rodgers Builders with the Pinnacle Award for overcoming unique challenges
Charlotte-based Rodgers Builders, Inc., general contractor for the Presbyterian Hospital Women’s Center Expansion & Renovation in Charlotte, NC, was honored with a 2005 Pinnacle Award for “Best Building Project” from Carolinas Associated General Contractors (AGC).
Additions included a 66,000-square-foot vertical expansion built literally on top of an existing 8-story precast parking deck. Plus, the job involved a 20,000-square-foot addition above an existing 2-story Children’s Hospital, with a 17,000-square-foot adjoining connector bridge. Renovations included a new 38-bed Neonatal ICU, 20 new GYN beds, and 31 new patient rooms.
Judges called the site conditions “unbelievably challenging.” The urban setting further complicated an already-daunting situation involving a very tightly confined site, an adjacent historic building, and ongoing hospital operations directly below the construction activity. A tower crane had to be positioned inside one of the six new concrete shear towers in the parking deck due to severe lack of space at ground level.
An architect on the job said “Our office has rarely worked on a more complex project… this team has taken the word ‘teamwork’ to a whole new level.”
The Best Building Project award was presented to Rodgers Builders at the Carolinas AGC Annual Convention at The Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes in Orlando, FL, January 27, 2005.
